"Readers are plentiful - thinkers are rare." - Harriet Martineau

Here's a nice little collection of puzzles on which you can spend your idle time. We hope you do well with them, but remember that the whole point is to have fun.

Clicking on the puzzle names (in the left column) will bring up a new window. You can take your time reading the puzzle, and when you are ready to check your answer against the solution, just click any of the "Go To Solution" buttons on the page.

The puzzles are listed in (approximately) increasing order of difficulty.

Dividing by 2

Two, four, six, eight ... who do we appreciate? Even numbers, that's who? Okay then, what about the others?

Adding odds

One and two make three. But what about five or seventeen or eighty-five? Why do the one's and two's get all the publicity?

Ages and Ages

What's your age. What's your mother's or father's age? What's your teacher's age? Why do I want to know? Maybe I'm just curious. Maybe I'm a nosy snoop. But maybe I just want to see if you know how to subtract!

Two words

Do you know two words? Red and green? Oops, that's three words. Yes I do? Oops, three words again! Argh!!

Poor old Betsy

When is a cow like a boat? When it's a sail. Oh, I mean, when it's ON sale! So figure out how much Betsy made (or lost) for her farmer.

Lotta triangles

Old McDonald had a triangle .. E I E I O .. with a triangle here, and a triangle there, here a triangle, there a triangle, everywhere a triangle!

An apple a day

Where's a teacher when you need one? We've got lots of apples and they're going quickly!

Fractional chickens

On the fifteenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me ... half a chicken. Now what can you do with half a chicken? Especially if it's not dead yet?

Farmer, corn, goose, fox

This is an old problem. How old you ask? It's so old, that when it first came out, phone numbers were only 2 digits! It's so old that when it first came out, Heinz only had 4 varieties! It's so old, that when it first came out, Baskin Robbins only had 3 flavors! It's so ... well, you get the idea.

Tall triangles

A triangle may be 'right', but that doesn't mean that looking at it differently is 'wrong'

Clocks and races

Round and round and round it goes, and it never gets anywhere! Well, in "time", maybe it will.

41 cents

Got milk? No? Okay, how about 41 cents? Well you better have at least that much if you want to cross my river!

17 cows

Farmer Smith knew the land and was a great farmer. He knew his sons and was a great father. He knew how to add, but oddly enough, he was really lousy at math!

Planets & Basketball

When you think about it, there is very little difference between planets and basketballs. They are both spherical. They both bounce when you throw them on the floor. Well, maybe a really big floor for a planet that is.

Onward bikes!

Remember when your parents taught you how to ride a bicycle? Remember when you finally did it all by yourself? Remember when you fell on your face? Oh, let's try to forget that, huh?

Circle PI

Round and round and round we go ... where we stop, only PI will know! Here's a cute math problem for you.
